The second edition of North American Criminal Gangs is no longer an edited work. Only 5 of the 19 articles have been retained to make room for the rewrite of Chapters 3, 4, and 5 and updated information. All the chapters in the new edition have been updated to reflect the spread of criminal gangs from Mexico, the United States and Canada throughout North America.

The new edition begins with a strengthened explanation of single purpose and organized criminal gangs and provides additional examples of each. Chapter Two: Street Gangs has updated information on the gangs and an added section on street gangs in Mexico. Chapter Three: Prison Gangs discusses prison gangs in Texas and California and White Supremacist prison gangs and their cross-border operations. The chapter has an extensive discussion of the Mexican Mafia and the Aryan Brotherhood. The rewritten Chapter Four: Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs emphasizes the cross-border operations of American-based OMGs with Mexican DTOs and Canadian OMGs. Chapter Five: Mexican Cartels is basically a new chapter and provides an in-depth discussion of the Mexican Cartels and their operations throughout North America, including their encroachment into Canada.
