Steven L. Snell

After completing studies in Classics at Johns Hopkins University, Steven L. Snell received the degree of Juris Doctor from Northwestern University School of Law and the degrees of Master of Laws and Doctor of Juridical Science from New York University School of Law. A member of the bars of the state of New York and the District of Columbia, he has practiced and published in the fields of maritime law, antitrust, and international commercial arbitration and litigation. In recent years, he has served as both vice-chair and co-chair of the International Transportation Committee of the American Bar Association’s Section of International Law. He is also an active member of the International Law Association: American Branch, the American Bar Association’s Antitrust Section, and the Selden Society (devoted to the study of the history of the common law). Elected in 2012 as a “Proctor in Admiralty” by the Maritime Law Association of the United States for his contributions to scholarship in the field, he serves on the Committee on Uniformity of U.S. Maritime Law - as well as on the Committee on International Organizations, Conventions, and Standards. A frequent speaker and moderator on at international law conferences and the author of two books on maritime jurisdiction, Dr. Snell has taught courses in political science at Johns Hopkins University, Bryn Mawr College, George Washington University, and Georgetown University – and he currently teaches Admiralty and Law of the Sea at American University’s Washington College of Law.
